If you’re in full swing of finding a day nursery for your child to attend, you might be wondering what happens in a day nursery. Will it be a good balance of fun activities and quiet time?
We’re sharing what happens in a day nursery, forest school, breakfast club and afterschool club, including a breakdown of activities.
Find out what a day in the life of a child at Stars Day Nursery looks like in this blog!

What Happens in a Day Nursery?

Our day nursery educational sessions include core reading, maths, phonics and outdoor play to ensure your children have the essential knowledge they need for the next big step.
We also create engaging learning activities that allow your child to develop their social skills.
Importantly, a healthy mix of outdoor and indoor activities are factored into our curriculum, with most of our day nurseries including outdoor spaces.
Lunch will include either hot meals cooked by our chef or a packed lunch brought from home, depending on what you’ve arranged.
With so much stimulus from socialising, learning and playing, it’s only natural for your child to need to catch up on their sleep. For younger children, we can follow usual sleep patterns during the first settlement session.
What Activities Do Nurseries Provide?
Not all nurseries provide the same activities.
The important thing is that variety is offered. A mix of early years education support, playtime, rest time and space to enjoy the fresh air, offers a nice mix.
At Stars Day, we’ve developed our own ASPIRE curriculum, designed to meet the DfE’s Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework.
Every hour of your child’s day will be planned out. It won’t all be fun and games – although we do our best to make learning as fun as playtime.
This allows us to provide 2–5-year-olds with the perfect first step in their education journey.
With indoor and outdoor facilities, your child also won’t be cooped up inside for too long! They’ll get the health benefits of spending time outdoors while being in a safe, secure environment.
Our ASPIRE curriculum includes the following activities:
- Communication and Language
- Personal, Social and Emotional
- Development
- Physical Development
- Maths
- Literacy
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Art and Design

Start the Day Strong with Breakfast Club

Breakfast club runs from 8:00 to 9:00 AM, and gives your child the best possible start to their day, while giving you the best possible chance of getting to work on time!
Your child will receive a nutritious breakfast, including cereal and fruit juice.
Our breakfast club is not just a chance to eat – we also provide light activities, including arts and crafts, outdoor play and educational reading.
Your child has the perfect chance to socialise with the other children, too, further developing their social skills.
At One with Nature: A Day at Our Forest School
What about our Forest School? If you want your child to embrace the great outdoors as much as possible, a Forest School could be just the thing.
A typical day at one of our Peterborough Forest Schools, may include the following activities:
Sensory Exploration
Sensory exploration includes observing the subtle changes in the weather, the texture of leaves and tree bark, and the peaceful sounds. All this fosters an appreciation for nature and helps children to feel more present with their surroundings – and we couldn’t think of a better way to spend the day than with Mother Nature!
The Allotment
Our Forest School includes our very own allotment. This means your child can tap into their green-fingered skills, learning about cultivation, life cycles, growing and harvesting. Your child will be growing their own tomatoes in no time!
Sustainability
Knowledge around sustainability could well help save the planet, so it’s pretty high up on our curriculum for our Forest School. From eco-systems and recycling to composting and climate change, your child will learn about the core challenges and solutions in a positive environment.
Forest Skills
The fun part! Essential forest skills include building a den, starting a fire (to cook marshmallows), and basic forestry. Let your child embrace the elements and learn how to survive in nature.
All activities centre around sustainability, forest skills and sensory exploration, while also encompassing core curriculum requirements. In other words, Maths and Literacy won’t be neglected. It’s a balanced approach to learning that offers more time in the great outdoors than the traditional day nursery.
What Activities Are Available at Our After School Clubs?

Our after school clubs help parents who work later into the afternoon. You want to know that they won’t be bored or stuck playing video games!
Fear not, we incorporate a healthy mix of playing games, reading books, spending time outdoors, and offering homework support.
Many parents really appreciate the homework support as it means that once your child is home, you can spend quality downtime with them. Whether that’s watching your favourite TV shows together, doing some bedtime reading or playing a game.
